DordtYart heralds the beginning of a new season: Located in a former shipyard, this park for contemporary art in the periphery of Dutch city Dordrecht invites ten artists to present one of their existing works – and produce a new one on site. In addition, three artists in residence profit from DordtYart’s generous facilities and make use of time and space to pursue their personal research.
Destined for residential redevelopment by 2020, the former industrial estate now serves as a temporary home for the DordtYart project. Thus tied to a strict 8-year timeframe, the project’s founders, Arie Jaap Warnaar and Lyda Vollebregt, knew they had to act fast, focus on practical solutions, and max out the site’s creative scope. The former marine plant’s interior, renovated by 2012 Architects, is now fully operational and invites artists to explore the notion of large-scale installations.
With its open layout, DordtYart combines exhibition and production under one roof and removes all barriers between the two. While visitors can enjoy the art on display, they can also shadow the artists at work, follow the development of new projects, or glimpse unusual behind-the-scenes peeks. At the same time, the unique and ambitious layout fosters dialog among the artists and encourages them to share expertise and resources.
Right now, DordtYart showcases a site-specific kinetic sculpture by Peter Vink, an eerie sound installation by Staalplaat Soundsystem, Dré Wapenaar’s piano pavilion, plus works-in-progress by a further ten international artists.
